Experts discuss domestic violence

Domestic violence affects every aspect of life in Azle, community leaders told a group gathered at Ash Creek Baptist Church on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Azle Police Chief Rick Pippins, Azle ISD District Social Worker Jamie Westbrook, and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital President Bob Ellzey spoke on the far-reaching impacts of domestic violence during a special luncheon focused on the city’s issues.

“Assaultive offenses” are by far the most prevalent crimes in Azle, Pippins said, and most take the form of domestic or family violence.

Tear gas brings man out

A local man is in jail following an incident that allegedly began as a disturbance and ended with Parker County Sheriff’s Special Operations Group members deploying tear gas into a home in the 1600 block of Jaybird Lane Aug. 25.

The incident caused the roadway to be closed in both directions near the home for several hours.

When sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a disturbance at the home, one of its occupants, Sean Jacob Fagan, 30, of Springtown, refused to come out.

Reno PD stop leads to big bag of meth

What started as a routine traffic stop by a Reno Police officer led to an arrest for a first-degree felony drug charge and the seizure of more than 30 grams of methamphetamine.

Kenneth Wayne Barber, 31, of Boyd, was pulled over by a Reno Police officer for not wearing his seatbelt just after 8 p.m. Aug. 22 near the intersection of Hwy. 199 and Midway Road.

When the officer engaged Barber, he noticed the suspect’s hands visibly shaking while trying to retrieve his driver’s license, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Tarrant indicts three

When the Tarrant County grand jury met in Fort Worth Aug. 21 and 23, they returned indictments for three local individuals.

• Lovid B. Woods, 48, of Azle, was indicted Aug. 21 on a charge of possession of 4-200 grams of methamphetamine, a second-degree felony and possession of methamphetamine in a correctional facility, a third-degree felony.

• Dusty Wayne Graham, 42, of Springtown, was indicted Aug. 21 on a charge of possession of 4-200 grams of methamphetamine, a second-degree felony.

Azle ISD Superintendent Tanya Anderson joined Congresswoman Kay Granger as well as law enforcement and other superintendents from around Granger’s district last week for a roundtable discussion on school safety and security.

Sting Fling slated here Sept. 8

Azle’s annual Sting Fling festival is just around the corner.

On Saturday, Sept. 8, the festivities will kick off with a parade at 9:30 a.m., which will travel down West Main Street, beginning at Church Street and ending at Roe Street.

Before the parade gets underway, the annual 5K Color Fling will start bright and early with warm-ups and registration at 6 a.m.

The 3.1 mile race begins at 7:30 a.m. in Central Park, goes through the Azle Business District, and finishes in Central Park.

Gold Card luncheon

Azle ISD’s Gold Card luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 22 saw a high turnout. The Gold Card is available for seniors 55 years or older who are residents of the Azle ISD. Cardholders get free general admission to any home extracurricular activity sponsored by the Azle Independent School District, as well as away District 5-6A athletic contests. Azle High School head football coach Devon Dorris (standing, center) was at the luncheon to speak with Gold Card holders about the upcoming season.

Reno tax rate holding steady

The tax rate will likely remain unchanged in the city of Reno.

The city council proposed a rate of $0.52 per $100 valuation Monday, Aug. 27.

That rate is the same as that from 2017-18 and slightly higher than the effective rate – the rate at which the city would collect the same amount of taxes as the previous year – of $0.506402.

It is more than two cents lower than the rollback rate of $0.540604.

The rate will garner the city an additional 4.39 percent – or $21,162 – over last year’s revenue.
