Azle’s biggest bash of the year, the Sting Fling festival, will kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Festivities will get underway with a parade at 9:30 which will travel down West Main Street, beginning at Church St. and ending at Roe St.

Before the parade, the annual 5K Color Fling will start bright and early with warm-ups and registration at 6.

The 3.1- and one-mile races begin at 7:30 in Central Park, 263 Main St..; runners head through the Azle business district then finish in Central Park.

Keeping the kids safe is a priority

The Azle Independent School District is in good shape for the 2018-19 school year, Superintendent Tanya Anderson told the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce at a Sept. 4 luncheon.

School security is more important than ever, Anderson said, and explained the district’s efforts to keep students safe.

“We have done a lot of work in this area – planning, researching, practicing our emergency plans, and not just recently, but for many years – and everyone has an opinion on how to keep schools safe.

City of Azle pool safety guidelines

With soaring summer temperatures forecast for the next several weeks, the city of Azle reminded residents of rules and regulations for safe swimming pools.

Barriers enclosing a swimming pool shall be at least four feet (4’) in height from the nearest level of earth and constructed to prohibit young children from crawling underneath, going through or over the barrier.

The barrier shall be constructed to have no opening, other than doors or gates, larger than four inches (4”) in width.

Reno requests study of busy intersection

In an effort to get ahead of a growing problem – one expected to only become more significant as the area grows – the city of Reno is reaching out to TxDOT about a dangerous stretch of roadway.

City Administrator Scott Passmore sent a letter to Tx-DOT Aug 22 requesting a traffic study to evaluate the “necessity of road expansion of FM 2257 between the intersections of Knob Road and FM 730” as well as the potential need for a traffic light and turning lanes at the intersection of FM 2257 and FM 730.

Town hall Sept. 6 in Reno

The potential annexation of land in Reno’s extraterritorial jurisdiction will that has spurred inaccurate rumors of involuntary annexation will be the main focus of a town hall meeting scheduled in Reno Sept. 6.

The city is hosting the gathering to discuss the potential annexation of Jennings Lane.

A letter sent to residents along the Jennings Lane from Mayor Eric Hunter said the town hall will be an opportunity to address ongoing misconceptions about the city’s plans that Hunter’s letter claims come from one unnamed citizen.

TC indicts 4

When the Tarrant County grand jury gathered Aug. 28-29, four Azleites were among those indicted on various felony charges.

• Brittany Nicole Cox, 26, was indicted Aug. 28 on a charge possession of tapentadol, state jail felony; possession of less than one gram of amphetimine, a state jail felony; possession of 28-200 grams of Zolpidem, a state jail felony; and possession of less than one gram of morphine, a state jail felony.

Homecoming Parade Sept. 24

It’s nearly time for Azle’s Homecoming parade, and a mandatory meeting is scheduled for participants.

Registration for the parade ends on Sept. 17, following a meeting at 5:15 p.m. in the Azle High School auditorium.

The meeting will include a discussion of the parade format, description and maps of the parade route and discussion of the staging area and traffic flow, Assistant Superintendent Todd Smith said.

There will also be a question and answer session.

An adult representative for each parade entry must be present at the meeting, Smith said.
