Five indicted in Parker Co.

When the Parker County Grand Jury met in Weatherford Aug. 23, five Azle men were among those indicted on various felony charges.

• William Kevin Hein, 40, was indicted on a charge of possession of marijuana, four ounces to five pounds, a state jail felony.

• Nathaniel Wayne Burrows, 37, was indicted on a charge of possession of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1, less than one gram, a state jail felony.

• John Richard Harrison, 57, was indicted on a charge of possession of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1, less than one gram, state jail felony.

Tax revenue up again

Azle saw a boost in its sales tax revenue this month, while other cities in the area experienced decreased revenue.

Azle’s Aug. 2018 revenue was nearly 16 percent higher than in Aug. 2017 – from $215,890 last Aug. to 215,890 this Aug., according to the state comptroller’s monthly sales tax revenue summary.

The city’s year-to-date revenue increased by six percent, from $1,649,309 in 2017 to $1,748,681 this year.

Reno’s Aug. 2018 revenue dropped by 12 percent, from $17,166 last Aug. to $15.089 Aug.

Dear deer to stay put

The deer are safe.

Following a discussion at an Aug. 22 city council meeting, the city will not take any formal action regarding the local deer population.

The city plans to include “educational” material about the deer on water bills and other city-issued documents to provide residents who don’t want the animals on their property with solutions – such as avoiding certain kinds of plants and flowers in yards – but will not create any fines or restrictions against feeding them.

Every year since 2008, the Azle Rotary Club has given every Azle ISD third grader a dictionary as the school year began. These students at Silver Creek Elementary got one of the 600 books Aug. 28.

Blaze scorches wedding venue

Wedding bell blues were averted after a fire burned part of The Deer Cove event venue Aug. 25 as the community stepped up to help owner Sara Langston in her time of need.

Around 3:30 p.m., Emergency Services District 1 firefighters were called to The Deer Cove, ESD 1 Fire Chief Stephen Watson said.

ESD 1 responded with four engines, two tankers, and 21 firefighters and had controlled the fire by 4.

The firefighters even managed to save a cake from a baby shower, Watson said.

Experts discuss domestic violence

Domestic violence affects every aspect of life in Azle, community leaders told a group gathered at Ash Creek Baptist Church on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Azle Police Chief Rick Pippins, Azle ISD District Social Worker Jamie Westbrook, and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital President Bob Ellzey spoke on the far-reaching impacts of domestic violence during a special luncheon focused on the city’s issues.

“Assaultive offenses” are by far the most prevalent crimes in Azle, Pippins said, and most take the form of domestic or family violence.

Tear gas brings man out

A local man is in jail following an incident that allegedly began as a disturbance and ended with Parker County Sheriff’s Special Operations Group members deploying tear gas into a home in the 1600 block of Jaybird Lane Aug. 25.

The incident caused the roadway to be closed in both directions near the home for several hours.

When sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a disturbance at the home, one of its occupants, Sean Jacob Fagan, 30, of Springtown, refused to come out.
