Rubye Neile Mitchell Buckel, 93, passed away Tuesday morning, April 28, 2020, at Legacy Oaks Assisted Living Community in Azle.

She was born Aug. 29, 1926 in Montgomery, Alabama, and married Walter Buckel on March 3, 1947 at her parents’ home in Montgomery. They lived in Dallas, Lubbock and San Diego before moving to Lamesa in 1949, where Walter played baseball for the Lobos of the West Texas-New Mexico League.

Over the next 55 years they made their home in Lamesa, where Walter worked in various jobs before becoming publisher of the Lamesa Press-Reporter in 1968. In addition to her work as a wife, mother and homemaker, Rubye worked at Baldwin’s Department Store, in the cafeteria at V.Z. Rogers Elementary School, and alongside her husband.

The family were active members of the Lamesa Church of Christ, where Rubye taught Sunday School for many years. They moved to Lubbock in 2010, and Walter preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Ott and Valeria Harmon, both of Montgomery; her daughter, Barbara Buckel, of Lubbock; son, Bob Buckel and daughter-in-law Krisan, of Azle; grandchildren Kara Rodriguez and husband Bryan, of Keller, Katie Buckel of Fort Worth, Alex Buckel of Abilene, Moses Lukeri of Edmond, Oklahoma, Kexsy Villeda Guerra of Fort Worth; and great-grandsons Ben and Luca Rodriguez and Jeremy Villeda.

Burial was at Dawson County Cemetery in Lamesa, under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.
