When a single-engine aircraft crashed during takeoff from a Wise County airfield on Aug. 16, the pilot died and his passengers – three people from Azle, including two children – were injured.

According to a news release from the Department of Public Safety (DPS), 35-year-old Brentley Smith and two boys – ages 9 and 14 – were injured when a Cessna 172 crashed at the end of a grass runway at the Rhome Meadows Airfield.

The pilot, 63-year-old Curtis Moore of Rhome, died on impact, according to the release.

Smith and one of the children were airlifted to Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth and Cook Children’s Medical Center in critical condition.

The other child was taken to Cook by ambulance.

The condition of the two boys is unknown.

Smith is still recovering from his injuries and was listed in “good condition” as of Friday, according to news reports.
