Murphy Mears

Murphy Mears went to be with our Lord on Thursday, October 7, 2021.

Visitation will be held at Biggers Funeral Home on Thursday, October 14 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Services to be held at the First Baptist Church of Castle Hills on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 10:30 am. Interment will be at Ash Creek Cemetery immediately after the service.

He was 92 years, 11 months and 2 days old. He was born on November 5, 1928, in Caney, OK and moved to Azle, Texas in 1957 with his wife, Polly, and their four children. A few years later they added two more children to the family. As the children grew, they became involved with youth baseball and helped to build on to their church, Castle Hills Baptist.

Over the years, Murphy worked for several different companies including General Motors and Dee Womack Concrete. But the job that he loved the most was Azle ISD where he was employed for over 47 years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Moose Lodge. He and his family were known throughout Azle for the fundraising benefits they would put on for those in need. When he wasn’t driving the school bus, he could be found mowing, hunting, gardening, singing karaoke or barbecuing. He worked hard and he played hard!

While he couldn’t serve in the military himself, he and Polly left a legacy of military service in their children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Polly Mears, and sons, Hoyle Mears and Donnie Mears.

He leaves behind daughters Retha Schultz and Debbie Mears and sons Marlin Mears & wife, Pat and Keith Mears; 13 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Shirley Roland, and many nieces and nephews.
