The basketball Lady Hornets survived the arrival of Little Elm – and some decidedly weak officiating – to pick up another victory.
Azle (7-4) beat the Lady Lobos 42-41 in another “gut it out performance,” coach Kathryn Otwell said. “It went back and forth,” the coach recalled. “But we had several players step up and make some big plays.” Some of those stellar plays came from Amber Williams who earned the defensive “Black Shirt” honor – named after the Nebraska football defense. “She had five steals, six points, and no turnovers,” Otwell said. About that officiating: “We overcame ‘obstacles’ and everyone pitched in,” the coach noted.
Another major factor in the victory was freshman Nikki Autry who played 30 minutes as a guard without a turnover. She also grabbed four boards. Williams’ 11 points paced Azle. Marlia Templeton netted eight, Kelsey Fulfer six, Cara Hoover and Lindsay Halter five, Britney Garcia four, and Autry three points. Otwell said the most impressive stat might have been that Azle took three charges, something AHS has been working on in practice, she said. |
