The Azle girls Major Division softball team ended its fine season with two close losses at sectional playoff action in Waco July 16-17.
Despite a combined no-hitter amongst pitchers Rebekah Teel, Shyanne Lane and Kenzi Harris, the Azle girls lost 2-0 to Midway Waco.
Two walks and three errors proved to be the girls’ downfall. Harris and Lane came back to pitch six strong innings in a second game against Midway Waco, but Azle still came out on the short end 6-3. The Azle girls scored two runs in the first inning but left the bases loaded.
Brooke Smith went 5-5 at the plate during the two games. “We hit the ball well at times, but just didn’t capitalize,” coach Mike Campoli said. “We left too many people on base.” Despite the two losses, Campoli couldn’t help but be proud of his girls. After all, the team went undefeated in District 7 play as it qualified for sectionals. Campoli said going back to the regular season and including the All Stars, the girls he has been associated with have gone 45-3. “These are a good bunch of girls,” he said. “I’m sure they’ll be playing together on through high school.” |
