Azle’s Matt Bright is competing among the best in the world in one of rodeo’s biggest showcases.
The local cowboy is vying in the bareback event at the annual Calgary Stampede in Canada.
With each day “treated like a separate rodeo,” the July 9-18 event is packed with competitors. Bright was included in the first batch of bareback riders on July 9; a second group is competing July 13-16. Riding Starburst initially, he was scored 81.5 on his first time out. Next came an 83.5 then an 82.5.
Bright stands ninth in his 10-man group; he’s pocketed $1,333.33 so far. One performance remained at press time. The top five finishers are rewarded with thousands of dollars daily, splitting $17,500 daily. The top four money earners of the group advance to the Finals round. The other six cowboys of each group are still alive, getting a shot at a wild card round July 17; two advance. From there, that duo and the four highest scores and fastest times reach the Showdown Round July 18 where the winner will earn $100,000. |
