The first tournament of the year for the basketball Lady Hornets was loaded with talented teams in Justin. Azle (4-4) went 0-3 at the Northwest tournament Nov. 19-21.
Things kicked off with a 55-44 loss to Granbury; scoring just two first quarter points doomed AHS.
The Lady Hornets got 20 points from Marlia Templeton, all in the final three periods. She hit 8-of-12 free throws. Kelsey Fulfer added 11 points while Lindsay Halter’s seven and Amber Williams’ six points rounded out the Lady Hornet scoring. Later that Nov. 19, Azle squared off against 5A Grapevine and fell 65-31.
Templeton’s nine points led the way for Azle. Also scoring were Baylie Sugg and Halter with six, Williams with five points, and Britney Garcia with four. The tournament ended for Azle with a 49-45 loss to L.D. Bell, another 5A school, on Nov. 20. AHS out-scored the Lady Raiders 27-25 over the final half. Templeton led Lady Hornet scorers again, this time with eight points. Sugg got six on a pair of treys late and Halter and Garcia also netted six points. Elle Motley, Williams and Fulfer added four while Nikki Autry scored two points. Azle beat visiting Castleberry on Nov. 24; see next week’s News for the story. |
