The mother of three children, all under age five, lost her home to fire. Sabrina Wooten, 26, works at Wal-Mart and had just won the 121 Alta Vista Ln. home in her divorce. She had no insurance.
The fire, which apparently started from an electrical short, occurred at about 11:30p.m. on Nov. 9, Wooten was microwaving food when it “made a loud noise,” she said. “The button caught fire and I unplugged it.
“I went into my room to eat and put the kids to sleep (when one of them) said the tv went off. I went to check the breaker box and the whole kitchen was on fire.” Her eldest son, 4, “followed my directions very well,” Wooten said, “but my other son didn’t want to walk, so I tucked my baby under my arm and pushed the other out the door. “No one got hurt,,” she added. The house, however, was gutted by the fire.
Friend and neighbor Ashley Allen said nothing was left. “There were a few things (that survived) in the back bathroom,” she said. The home was located in the Midway area. Fire departments from LaJunta, Springtown and Silver Creek responded to the blaze, and volunteers from the Cross Timbers Red Cross arrived to give assistance. The Red Cross, however, can only provide a few days’ worth of shelter, clothing and food, and so Wooten and her children are staying with Wooten’s grandparents. “I don’t really have a choice,” Wooten said.
