It got a little shaky there at the end, but the 2009-10 Hornet basketball season opened with a win. Azle (1-0) hosted Stephenville, a team that beat AHS by 15 points last year. This time around, the Hornets led the entire game, often by double digits, and won 50-47.
But late, with post Joe Richards fouled out midway through the fourth period, the Yellow Jackets made a push and a bucket with 5.3 seconds left got the visitors to within three points. Then, Azle turned the ball over.
But the Hornets, the 6-4A favorites, thwarted the final effort and the home crowd went home content. Azle coach Eddy Prather said, “I was happy to get a win. We saw some things to work on, especially with what went on down the stretch. But we can fix those things. I was proud of this win.” Drew Charles led AHS scorers with 18 points, Kellen Myers had 13, Richards 8, Jimmy Walker 4, Dillon Bagwell, 3, and Tyler Holly and Jake Zuilhof, 2 each as Azle shot 41.7 percent.
Zuilhof’s eight rebounds was tops. Charles nabbed seven and Walter snatched five of AHS’s 28 boards. Nathaniel Shaffer blocked two Stephenville shots while Charles, Myers, and Richards stole a trio of balls apiece. Prather said the squad will travel to Waco Sunday to watch former Hornet star John Derr play for Hardin-Simmons against Baylor. |
