The annual All-District list registered seven worthy volleyball Lady Hornets. Two Azle players earned special recognition, giving AHS three First Teamers.
Shelbi Vaughan was picked as the 6-4A Most Valuable Blocker. The sophomore led Azle with 76 total blocks, 19 solo and 57 assists. She also paced the Lady Hornets in kills with 170 and added 21 digs.
Junior Miranda Miller was the Co-Most Valuable Server in the district. She smote a team-high 54 aces. Miller, an outside hitter who played in 50 games, shone all around with 152 kills, 187 digs, and 24 blocks. Azle’s other First Team selection was senior outside hitter Sara Waresback. In 50 games, she killed 103 balls, blocked 29, dug out 27, and served 17 aces. Lady Hornet Ashley Goforth was a Second Team pick. The senior setter had 261 set assists in 48 games. She added 102 digs and 11 kills.
A trio of AHS athletes were named Honorable Mention. Senior Britney Garcia had 55 kills, 42 digs, 26 blocks, and 7 aces in district play. Kristi Luektemeyer, a junior setter, carded 223 assists to go with 84 digs and 14 aces. Sophomore Jordan Arnold, who suffered a substantial knee injury in Azle’s playoff game against Denton Ryan, killed 43 balls, blocked 36, dug out 27, and served 9 aces. Coach Melissa Scogin said, “Some of our kids stood out and they deserved these awards.” |
