They’re seldom in the spotlight. Working quietly behind the scenes, their support of community projects and events improves the quality of life for all Azle area residents.
The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce used its Aug. 6 awards banquet to honor those unsung heroes with a plaque and a moment in the spotlight.
The highlight of the evening was emcee Mark Baumann’s presentation of the Bright Star Citizen of the Year Award. Using words like “enthusiastic, flexible, unflappable, driven, organizer, leader and unselfish motivator and recruiter” he described this year’s honoree, volunteer fundraiser extraordinaire Debra Jenkins. Jenkins has been instrumental in helping the Azle Memorial Library raise over $180,000 for books, computers and other equipment during the 2007 and 2008 Library Gala fundraisers.
She has also worked tirelessly for the Hospital Auxiliary, the Rotary Club and other local organizations, lending her touch at soliciting donations and raffle items and organizing events. “There are many, many other fantastic examples I could give you, but we want to make sure she receives her award tonight,” Baumann said. Jenkins, obviously surprised by the news, was gracious in accepting the honor, sharing the glory with friends who have worked alongside her. “It’s not about me,” she said. “It is this community. I have great friends who have inspired me and who have never said no when I asked them to get involved.” The chamber also recognized Azle ISD’s top educators, reviving a tradition. Outgoing chamber board president Marsha Hardin recognized Walnut Creek Elementary teacher Jana Hunt, a 24 year teaching veteran, as the Elementary Teacher of the Year, while Dr. Suzanne Murr, a family/consumer science teacher at Azle High School since 1972, was honored as the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year. The Appreciation Award went to Oncor Electric and its representative Suzan Greene. Oncor has been a regular sponsor of major chamber events. The Shooting Star Director’s Award – given to the volunteer who provides the most behind-the-scenes support to the director – went to longtime chamber volunteer Polly Huffman. Quality Trailer Manufacturing, Inc., which overcame a devastating fire last spring to build a new facility on Main Street, received the Shining Star Beautification/Improvement of Business Property Award. Steve Garner, the company’s director of purchasing, was on hand to accept the award. The Rising Star New Business of the Year Award went to Ash Creek Stables and co-managers Dave White and Jeff Edwards. Ash Creek Stables has sponsored several fundraisers including a cancer awareness barrel racing event. The Twinkling Star Award – given to the chamber’s Businesswoman of the Year – went to Dr. Brooke Porter who owns Azle Dental Care and hosts youth-oriented events behind the scenes. The Super Star Award – otherwise known as the Businessman of the Year Award – went to John Webster and John’s Main Street Christian Bookstore. Baumann recognized Webster for his willingness to support the community, church and schools despite operating in a down economy. Huffman Irrigation, co-owned by Don and Polly Huffman, earned the Gold Star Business of the Year Award. Longtime city employees stormwater manager Jimmy Duvall and utility manager Rick White each received a “Friend of the Chamber” award. Duvall was lauded for his “can-do attitude” while White was thanked for his efforts to rid Roe Street of floodwaters in time for last year’s Sting Fling festival. The chamber also took a moment to recognize its People’s Choice Awards – everything from favorite restaurant to favorite cashier and lunch spot. Baumann said small businesses remain the heart and soul of Azle, working together for the betterment of all. “We’re here to support each other any time we can,” he said. “That’s what makes Azle unique.” Incoming board president Kim Ware said there is plenty to look forward to in the new year. “I’m proud of this community and what it represents,” she said. “I believe the city, school district, merchants, businesses, civic organizations and individuals in Azle are some of the finest people that you will ever have the pleasure of doing business with.” She asked chamber members to get involved. The chamber’s biggest event of the year – the Sting Fling Festival – is set for Sept. 25-26. “I encourage you to support one another and the chamber members sitting next to you who do so much to make this community such a fine place to live, work, eat, shop and be entertained,” she said. |
